🏥 CBU and IHDA have begun work on a pilot project to implement IHDA's standard concept for the design of healthcare facilities in Ukraine

📆 On 9 December 2025, a workshop was held on a pilot project to implement the Integrated Hospital Design Alliance (IHDA) standard design concept for healthcare facilities in Ukraine, an initiative aimed at developing a modern modular hospital design for Ukrainian communities.

The event was dedicated to clarifying the functional principles and key drivers that will determine the architectural and planning decisions for future hospitals, taking into account the Ukrainian context of medical care and the specificities of community work.

The Finnish participants in the meeting were:

👤 Jukka Vasara, Vice President, Granlund Oy.

👤 Kaisa-Liisa Raiskinkmäki, Chief Architect, Granlund Oy.

👤 Henry Pesonen, Head of Hospital Planning, Nordic Healthcare Group.

👤 Martin Boyadjian, Architect, ONE Architects Oy.

👤 Antti Alho, Vice President, Nordic Healthcare Group.

👤 Pekka Narinen, CEO, COO, AINS Group.

👤 Anna-Ritta Kallinen, Owner and Chair of the Board, ARK Consulting, ARKCON.

The Ukrainian side was represented by:

👤 Oleksandr Chervak, CEO, CBU

👤 Olena Molotkova, Business Development Manager, CBU

👥 Authorised representatives of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine and the Ministry of Community and Territorial Development of Ukraine

👥 Representatives of the management of healthcare institutions in the communities of Kharkiv, Khmelnytskyi, Ternopil, Bucha, Brovary, Cherkasy, Zhytomyr, Odesa and Volyn regions.

🧑‍⚕️ During the meeting, attention was paid to such aspects as the optimal organisation of inpatient wards, the balance between general and specialised departments, the structure of outpatient services and their spatial requirements, as well as the organisation of logistics flows of patients, staff and materials.

The participants considered the structure of the future medical institution, in particular the optimal organisation of inpatient wards, the balance between general and specialised departments, the development of outpatient services and the determination of their spatial requirements.

📄 An important part of the discussion was the concept of functional planning, which determines the logic and interconnection of all elements of the hospital. The principles of organising outpatient and inpatient departments, surgical units, diagnostic and support services were considered. It is this structured logic that should form the basis for creating a new generation of hospitals that are universal, safe and convenient for patients and medical staff.

🗓️ During the workshop, participants also familiarised themselves with the project implementation schedule for 2026–2027. It is planned that the architectural design of the hospital will be developed in early 2026, after which a pilot hospital will be selected to become the first example of the practical implementation of the modular concept in Ukraine.

📋 For reference:

On 12 November 2025, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the Confederation of Builders of Ukraine and IHDA.

Finnish experts, drawing on their many years of experience in designing medical facilities, will develop a basic hospital model that can be reused in different regions of Ukraine. Ukrainian architects, in cooperation with IHDA, will adapt this model to national construction and medical standards.

Importantly, communities will be able to use these projects free of charge for state and municipal initiatives in the field of healthcare.

The implementation of the pilot project is funded by the Finnish Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
