🏗️ SBС В.1.1-12:2025 “Construction in Seismic Areas. General Provisions” has been updated!

🗓️ On July 7, 2026, SBС В.1.1-12:2025 “Construction in Seismic Areas. Basic Provisions“ will come into effect, replacing the previous version of SBС В.1.1-12:2014 ”Construction in Seismic Areas of Ukraine.“ The document was developed by the State Enterprise ”State Research Institute of Building Structures."

⛰️ The standards establish the basic provisions and requirements for the design, new construction, and reconstruction of buildings and structures in areas with seismic intensity of 6 or higher on the seismic intensity scale.

📊 Overall, the updated standards are aimed at improving the safety of buildings and structures in the event of earthquakes and refining methods for assessing seismic effects during the design phase.

Key points of the document:

🔹 establishes requirements for ensuring the seismic resistance of buildings and structures;

🔹 defines the characteristics of seismic impact and methods for accounting for them in calculations;

🔹 regulates the design of structures and engineering systems in seismically hazardous areas;

🔹 contains maps of seismic zoning in Ukraine and a list of settlements in seismic zones. 

What has changed:

🔹 Approaches to determining the design seismic intensity have been refined to account for soil conditions and seismic zoning;

🔹 Methods for calculating seismic loads have been updated (spectral method, accelerograms, response spectra);

🔹 modern principles for ensuring seismic resistance have been established, taking into account different earthquake levels—weak, design, and maximum;

🔹 requirements for the design of buildings of different consequence classes (CC1–CC3) in seismic zones have been refined;

🔹 requirements for seismic protection systems, in particular seismic isolation of buildings, have been added.

☝️ In particular, the new edition of the SBС updates the regulatory framework for the design of buildings in seismic zones of Ukraine and aligns approaches to the assessment of seismic effects with modern engineering calculation methods.
