EXTENDED ADVISORY GROUP MEETING OF THE PILOT PROJECT ON THE DEVELOPMENT OF A MODERN HOSPITAL ARCHITECTURAL AND PLANNING CONCEPT
📅 On 12 November in Warsaw, Poland, an extended meeting of the Advisory Group of the Pilot Project on the development of an architectural and planning concept for a modern hospital took place.
The event became an important stage in forming approaches to creating typical functional solutions, logistical schemes, and modular structures of medical facilities that can be adapted to the needs of Ukrainian communities during the reconstruction of the healthcare system.
✅ During the meeting, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the Confederation of Builders of Ukraine (CBU) and the Integrated Hospital Design Alliance (IHDA) within the pilot project for implementing the IHDA typical design concept for healthcare facilities in Ukraine.
🎤 The meeting was chaired by Jukka Vasara, Vice President of Granlund Group and Chair of the Integrated Hospital Design Alliance (IHDA), who presented the participants as well as the format and details of the event.
Speakers included:
👤 Henry Pesonen, Head of Hospital Planning, Nordic Healthcare Group:
“We summarised the available documentation on Ukrainian hospitals, clarified the needs, and compiled a list of questions. Based on Scandinavian experience, we presented a systematic approach to Ukrainian authorities. The functional programme is urgent, therefore the final design will evolve during the process.”
👤 Antti Alho, Vice President of Nordic Healthcare Group, spoke about the principles and utilisation of the IHDA modular concept:
“The conceptual hospital is not a finished hospital. It is a flexible structural framework that enables fast and efficient planning tailored to specific needs.”
👤 Kimmo Lintula, Finnish architect, presented the project “Modular Hospital Concept – for all scales”:
“Modular solutions offer high flexibility and adaptability, reduce stress for patients and staff, improve sleep, safety, and take into account the local context.”
👤 Juha Valtari, Executive Vice President, AINS Group:
“Modular solutions ensure standardised and repeatable dimensions, accelerating the design process and reducing errors. Fewer individualised solutions mean lower design and on-site construction costs.”
👤 Anna-Riitta Kallinen, Owner and Chair of the Board, ARK Consulting / ARKCON:
“We use space requirement cards from Finnish hospitals as template material in machine-readable form. Calculations and visualisations are available for typical medical rooms. Already during the first workshop, we begin working based on these materials.”
👤 Oleksandr Chervak, CEO of the Confederation of Builders of Ukraine:
“Such projects and cooperation are important for accelerating reconstruction processes in Ukraine. Our goal is to make recovery accessible, predictable, affordable, and based on the best global practices. Therefore, we are glad to be partners in this project and will work to implement it quickly. Our next step after the project preparation is building a pilot hospital in one of the Ukrainian communities. This work is already underway.”
🗂️ During the meeting, the following matters were also discussed:
✔️ schedule of group meetings
✔️ roadmap: development of typical solutions, typologies, functional and logistical schemes, with project documentation packages delivered by December 2026
✔️ technical framework: digitalisation goals, low‑carbon requirements, and (where applicable) EU Taxonomy alignment
✔️ team work format: multidisciplinary workshops with local partners; weekly thematic sessions with designated representatives for each topic
📋 Communities will be able to apply these designs free of charge for state and municipal initiatives.
The implementation of this pilot project is funded by the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland.
WE WILL WIN AND REBUILD EVERYTHING! 💪
TOGETHER TO VICTORY!
GLORY TO UKRAINE! 💙💛
