🏗️ Safe Work as the Foundation of Reconstruction: Industry Dialogue Results

On April 29, 2026, the Occupational Safety Conference "Building Safe and Sustainable Workplaces" was held. The event focused on occupational safety, social dialogue, and human resources training within the context of large-scale reconstruction. Participants included representatives from trade unions, government authorities, international organizations, business, and expert communities.

🪓 Ambet Yuson, General Secretary of BWI (Building and Wood Worker's International), also delivered a welcoming address.

During the first panel, participants discussed the need for synergy to ensure rapid, high-quality, and safe reconstruction. They addressed challenges such as the shadow labor market and labor shortages, as well as international experiences — specifically from the USA and South Korea — in professional training and industry development. Special emphasis was placed on the importance of investing in education as the foundation for long-term growth.

⚙️ The second panel was dedicated to the reintegration of veterans into the labor market and the construction industry’s role in creating systemic conditions for this process. Participants emphasized that developing social dialogue is a key factor, as a significant portion of the construction labor market remains informal, which complicates the provision of proper working conditions and social guarantees for veterans.

🧱 The next thematic session focused on occupational diseases in the construction and cement industries, particularly the impact of dust and the need for enhanced health monitoring. The discussion also covered the roles of employers and trade unions in risk prevention, legal protection for workers, and union participation in accident investigations.

📌 The event was organized by PROFBUD together with the Confederation of Builders of Ukraine (CBU), supported by the Swedish partner organization Union to Union and the Swedish Institute.
