On December 5, 2024, the General Assembly of the European Construction Industry Federation (FIEC) took place, with the participation of Oleksandr Chervak, CEO of the Confederation of Builders of Ukraine (CBU).  

 

The latest trends in housing construction within the European Union, particularly the rising costs and declining volumes of work in this sector, became the central topic of discussion. During an open discussion moderated by Piero Petrucco, President of the European Construction Industry Federation (FIEC), representatives of the European Investment Bank and the European Commission addressed issues such as affordable housing, the implementation of energy-efficient approaches, and prospects for attracting investments.  

 

Speakers included:

🗣️ Luciana Tomozei Schwandt, Head of Division Global Affairs and Sectoral Policies, European Investment Bank (EIB)  

🗣️ Pau Garcia Audi, Team Leader in the 'Buildings Team' (DG ENER), European Commission  

 

💡FIEC emphasizes several key aspects for addressing current issues. Among them are the need for a coordinated approach to reforms, simplifying working conditions, supporting digitalization, increasing the sector's attractiveness to solve the problem of labor and skills shortages, ensuring access to financial aid and EU programs.  

 

During the meeting, the results of FIEC’s work in 2024 were summarized, and plans for 2025 were outlined.  

 

📜Recently, FIEC published its 2024 report under the slogan “A Competitive and Sustainable Construction Industry: Our Mission.”  

 

The annual report describes FIEC's activities over the past 12 months, presents the latest innovations, initiatives, events, and achievements. Videos and informational materials are also available for download via the link.

🌐Special attention was given to the activities of the Task Force FIEC – EIC "Ukraine" over the past two years since its establishment. 

 

Kjetil Tonning, Head of the FIEC-EIC Task Force “Ukraine”, provided updates on the Recovery Construction Forum 3.0. Mr. Tonning thanked the CBU and partners, emphasizing the importance of such events and the continuation of Europe’s support for Ukraine. 

 

FIEC members decided to support Ukraine's reconstruction by donating €25,000 toward the restoration of one of the destroyed infrastructure facilities, with the work to be carried out by a Ukrainian company.  

 

🤝Oleksandr Chervak, CEO of the CBU, expressed gratitude for FIEC's steadfast support, ranging from involvement in implementing initiatives to donations for socially significant projects.  

 

Mr. Chervak called FIEC members and all interested parties to support FIEC’s initiative. He also noted that the CBU is open to cooperation in developing modern projects urgently needed for Ukraine's rapid and high-quality recovery.  

 

The date for the next FIEC General Assembly was announced: May 15–16, 2024, in Athens, Greece.

 

Additionally, several other events scheduled for spring 2025 were announced:  

On March 6, 2025, a special EIB event dedicated to affordable housing will take place in Luxembourg.  

 

On April 24–25, 2025, the Spring General Assembly of the EIC (European International Contractors) will be held in France, focusing on the decarbonization of infrastructure construction.
