🏗️🌿Green Technologies for a Strong Ukraine: International Experience and Ukrainian Reconstruction
How can Ukraine's ecological rebuild become a reality today? This was the central topic of the second panel discussion during the "GREEN RECONSTRUCTION OF UKRAINE" event at the Ukraine Recovery Conference 2025.
🔎The discussion focused on modern solutions in the field of eco-materials: wooden modules, recycled concrete, hemp-based construction materials, “green” cement, and innovations in construction waste management.
💬“Such conferences always inspire me — they make me reflect on the future, on cultural heritage, and on the Italian experience that we can adapt in Ukraine. It is a great joy for me to work with Ukraine, and even despite the horrors of war — not to give up. The future begins today, so let’s boldly look ahead,” — shared Kate Le Moignic, Director International Relations, Neo-Eco Ukraine.
🌲Norway supports Ukraine with a project in Borodianka
The Norwegian company Moelven Byggmodul, specializing in wooden housing construction, has launched a pilot project in Borodianka. Its goal is to provide Ukrainian families with high-quality and eco-friendly housing.
💬“We are a large group owned by forest owners. We build wooden houses — and for us, this is more than just business. It’s a practice of zero-waste production, it’s about caring for people and the quality of life. Our pilot project in Borodianka is just the beginning. We want wooden houses to become part of a new Ukrainian reality — sustainable, socially oriented, and modern,” — stated Frode Henning Killi, CEO of Moelven Byggmodul.
♻️From Waste to New Construction Materials
The Belgian scientific organization VITO presented its approach to creating new construction materials from the debris of destroyed buildings. This method not only reduces the environmental footprint but also conserves valuable resources.
💬“We study the remains of demolished buildings, extract minerals from them, and create a new material — an alternative to cement. We enable reactions between components to form something more durable, more robust. This material is not only environmentally friendly; it allows us to reuse what is usually discarded. And we want to implement this approach in Ukraine — just as we did in Belgium,” — emphasized Mieke Quaghebeur, Programme Manager Waste Recycling team at VITO.
🏘️Estonian Experience in Large-Scale Housing Reconstruction
The Estonian company Matek is already actively working in Ukraine, particularly in the Chernihiv region, combining local resources with international expertise in sustainable construction.
💬“We are not new to this field — in Estonia, we have delivered over two thousand apartments, and we are currently restoring housing in Nizhyn and the Chernihiv region. We actively use biomaterials and closely collaborate with Ukrainian builders. Our mission is not just to construct housing, but to transfer technology, build cooperation networks, and make Ukraine part of the European recovery ecosystem,” — said Kaarel Vaer, Sales Director at Matek.
🌿Hemp as a Resource for the Future of Ukrainian Construction
Ukrainian Hemp, a young Ukrainian company, is promoting the use of industrial hemp-based construction materials. Its founders view this not only as an ecological, but also a strategic direction for the country.
💬“We understand that talking about ecology during wartime is difficult. But now is precisely the time to lay the foundation for sustainable development. We are studying the Italian experience, as Italy is a leader in eco-materials. And we believe Ukraine can be just as successful. But without lobbying, without a legal framework, without state support — it’s impossible. We are ready to invest, to educate, to promote — we just need to be heard,” — noted Michael Marchuk, Chairman of the Board of Ukrainian Hemp.
🏭Clean Cement Plant in Mykolaiv Region: Reducing Emissions Tenfold
A representative of Clean Cement spoke about the construction of Ukraine’s first eco-friendly cement production plant, which is already launching in the Pervomaisk community.
💬“We are a joint venture with Danish capital. Our technology allows us to reduce CO₂ emissions by a factor of ten compared to traditional cement production. Ukraine has the potential not only for domestic construction, but also for exporting eco-materials across Europe. Our challenge now is to overcome bureaucracy, and we are already on that path,” — shared Bart Gruyaert, Representative of Clean Cement.
